The little sweetheart in this photo is shy and quiet. She likes her own space and is quite dreamy. I let children be themselves, whether boisterous and super extroverted or soft and gentle. Understanding family dynamics is important as a family photographer. It's handy to give your photographer the heads up on your children's personalities. If you do this, the moment they jump out of the car, we know what page we are all on!
Having four children of my own, I understand all children are different and we need to respect and enjoy them for who they are.
I like to ask parents for the names of the children before the family photo session. I try to gain their early respect and know children respond to adults who remember their names. I learnt this when my husband, who is really great at remembering names, received a compliment from a teenager. The young man told his Dad he loved the way Michael had remembered his name. It's the little things that mean so much.
I let children be themselves in a family photo session and not push anything too much. Children learn to trust me and then often feel so comfortable they start proposing stunts of their own for me to document!
This photo was taken at the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens during an extended family photo shoot. There was Mum and Dad, their four children and then the partners and grandchildren. For another photo of this session click here. You will notice the families colour palette - mustard, burgundy and navy blue. Perfect for a winter or autumn family photo shoot!
